Give useful feedback
The idea
Useful feedback identifies a specific feature and a practical next step. Focus on the work rather than judgments about the person. Connect suggestions to the assignment’s goal. The author should decide how to revise after understanding the feedback.
Worked example
Instead of “this is bad,” say “the second paragraph states the result but does not show the measurements; add the relevant values.” This identifies both the gap and a possible revision.
Another application
“Add the measurement units to the graph’s vertical axis” tells the author what is missing and how to repair it. Pair this with a reason: units help readers interpret the values.
A common misunderstanding
Feedback about a person’s ability does not identify how to improve the work. Specific observations are more actionable.
Try it yourself
Review a short paragraph using three prompts: what is clear, what needs evidence, and what change would help the reader most?
Check your understanding
Which feedback is more useful: “nice” or “your example makes the definition clear”?
Reveal the explained answer
The second identifies a specific successful feature.
